Pride and Pleasure
Pride and Prejudice is a novel of manners by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.

Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of «most loved books» such as The Big Read. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen’s memorable characters or themes.

As the stars of the screen they shared their secrets with millions. Offstage they were ordinary people with homes and dreams, lives and loves, every bit as real...

When Manhattan was conceived as a new TV series it offered more than just a chance for a network to make the ratings. For the stars involved it meant the chance of a lifetime - if they were prepared to pay the price.

Sabina Quarles saw a second chance to love when it had seemed her life was over. For Bill Warwick it meant salvation from a tangled web of unhappiness he'd been powerless to escape. And as the viewers watched the drama unfold, the actors shared their passion and pain in the performance of their lives.

ane Austen  (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose works include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. Her biting social commentary and masterful use of both free indirect speech and irony eventually made Austen one of the most influential and honored novelists in the English Literature.

First published in 1816, Emma is a comic novel about the «handsome, clever, and rich» title character and the follies surrounding her attempts at matchmaking. In her misguided schemes involving almost everyone’s romantic interests but her own, Emma manages to wreak disaster and charm at the same time.

Three Men in a Boat
A comic masterpiece that has never been out of print since it was first published in 1889, Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat" includes an introduction and notes by Jeremy Lewis in "Penguin Classics". Martyrs to hypochondria and general seediness, J. and his friends George and Harris decide that a jaunt up the Thames would suit them to a 'T'. But when they set off, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather forecasts and tins of pineapple chunks - not to mention the devastation left in the wake of J.'s small fox-terrier Montmorency. "Three Men in a Boat" was an instant success when it appeared in 1889, and, with its benign escapism, authorial discursions and wonderful evocation of the late-Victorian 'clerking classes', it hilariously captured the spirit of its age. In his introduction, Jeremy Lewis examines Jerome K. Jerome's life and times, and the changing world of Victorian England he depicts - from the rise of a new mass-culture of tabloids and bestselling novels to crazes for daytripping and bicycling. Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) was born in Walstall, Staffordshire, and educated at Marylebone Grammar School. He left school at fourteen to become a railway clerk, the first in a long line of jobs that included actor, teacher and journalist. His first book, "On Stage and Off", a collection of humorous pieces about the theatre, was published in 1885, and was followed the year after with the more commercially-successful "The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow"; but it was with "Three Men in a Boat" (1889) that Jerome achieved lasting fame. He later went on to become one of the founders of the humorous magazine, "The Idler", and continued to write articles and plays. If you enjoyed "Three Men in a Boat", you might like Stella Gibbons's "Cold Comfort Farm", also available in "Penguin Classics".

Ports of Call
A graceful story of love across an insuperable gulf and a powerful allegory for the conflict that has beset the Middle East for the last half century. To call your son Ossyane is like calling him Rebellion. For Ossyane's father it is a gesture of protest by an excited Ottoman prince, for Ossyane himself it is a burdensome responsibility. At eighteen he leaves Beirut to study in Montpellier, far away from his father's revolutionary aspirations for him. But it is 1938, and when war breaks out in Europe, Ossyane is drawn into the Resistance. His return to Beirut is a rebel hero's welcome after all, and a joyful reunion with Clara, whom he first met in France. But if one war has brought the Jewish-Muslim couple together, another, much closer to home, is destined to separate Ossyane from the people and the world that he loves.

The Aleph
Borges' stories have a deceptively simple, almost laconic style. In maddeningly ingenious stories that play with the very form of the short story, Borges returns again and again to his themes: dreams, labyrinths, mirrors, infinite libraries, the manipulations of chance, gaucho knife-fighters, transparent tigers and the elusive nature of identity itself.
